Clea DuVall has managed to curve out a niche for herself as the “outside”, by choosing roles like the character, Stokely Mitchell in the movie The Faculty or Graham Eaton in But, I'm A Cheerleader. But as her career continues to blossom, we can surely expect many wonderful things from this gifted actress. An only child to Rosemary and Stephen, Clea called Southern California home, for most of her life. Her parents divorced as Clea entered into her teens. When Clea's Mother made plans to re-marry, she didn't feel at home in the newly structured family unit. At the age of 16, she decided it would be best for her to move out on her own. “I was done being at home,” she says. “I was unhappy there, so I left. I was very much an individual and independent at a young age.” Unable to fully support herself while attending high school full time, Clea figured it was best that she leave school and continue in her search for full time employment. Once she was steady on her feet, Clea wanted to return to her studies, but also be able to focus on her true passion, performing arts. During her childhood Clea spent a lot of time watching television programs. At a young age she was able to memorize scenes and recite lines from her favourite television shows. As she got older, she became more of a movie buff. Clea decided that acting was the only route to go, it was the only thing that kept her excited and on her toes. So, she enrolled herself into a full time program at Los Angeles' School for the Performing Arts. The return to school did not go as well as hoped. “My senior year, I was basically supporting myself, so it was like, ‘Do you want to eat and pay the rent, or do you want to go to school?' I wanted to eat and pay the rent. That was more of a priority than me passing a biology test.” So she again decided to focus on life outside of school. “They [teachers] didn't like me very much. They thought I was just this punk kid and they always wanted to kick me out.” To support herself, she worked various jobs, numerous waitressing and restaurant jobs for example. During this time Clea participated in a few theatrical productions, such as Laughing Wild, Extremities, and Night Mother. In 1996 she was cast in a film called Little Witches. Sadly it didn't make much of a buzz. She participated in a few other films, such as Niagara, Niagara, Sleeping Beauties, and the made for TV movie The Defenders: Payback, before signing on to co-star in the sci-fi thriller The Faculty. It was with the release of this movie that people first noticed Miss DuVall. She went on to star in such movies as Girl, Interrupted, The Laramie Project, 21 Grams, Identity, and most recently The Grudge. Clea is a complex person – soft spoken and friendly, yet tough and independent. She continues to lend this complexity to her characters, making her a popular casting choice.
