Aaliyah (Aaliyah Dana Haughton) was born on January 16th, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York. When she was 5 years old her family moved to Detroit.
In 1989 she unsuccessfully took part in the show "Star Search", a quite popular talent show back then. One year later she performed with Gladys Knight whose ex-husband was Aaliyah's uncle.
Her uncle, Barry Hankerson, happened to be the manager for R. Kelly. Aaliyah's album was formed with guest vocals and help from this singer who had already been popular at that time. Her first album was released under the name "Age ain't nothing but a number".
Aaliyah and R. Kelly were said to have a relationship, there were even rumors regarding abortions and marriage. But none of these stories have been confirmed.
Her next album was "One in a million". It was produced without the help of R. Kelly but with the support of another extraordinary producer, Timbaland. She also made several movie soundtracks at that time. One of those was the soundtrack for the movie "Romeo must die" (with Jet Li and DMX) in which she also actively took part as an actress.
Haughton's third album "Aaliyah" was released when she was 22 years old. Her career had reached its peak. Aaliyah's last artistic work was the production of the music video "Rock the boat", after filming the video, Aaliyah and some of the people she worked with died in an air crash on a flight back to New York. She was 22 years old.
